Introduction to Exhaust Absorption Chillers: An exhaust absorption chiller is a cooling system mainly used for utilising waste heat to produce chilled water for air conditioning or industrial processes. Instead of releasing hot exhaust gases into the atmosphere, the system captures this energy to run a chiller. An absorption chiller has a very straightforward operation. Its operation is fundamentally similar to what happens in a vapor compression chiller in that both processes involve condensation and evaporation of the refrigerant within the system. These chillers can achieve similar cooling performance as direct-fired chillers, and can be used in applications ranging from air conditioning to process cooling. How does Exhaust Absorption Chillers work: Exhaust absorption chillers operate by utilizing waste heat, typically from the exhaust of engines, turbines, or industrial processes, to drive a refrigeration cycle without relying on electricity. The system uses a refrigerant-absorbent solution, commonly water and lithium bromide. The process is as follows:- ● Heat Source: Hot exhaust gases from engines/turbines are used to heat the system. ● Generator: Exhaust heat boils off water (refrigerant) from a lithium bromide solution. ● Condenser: The vaporized water condenses into a liquid form, releasing heat. ● Evaporator: The liquid water evaporates again, absorbing heat from the chilled water system (this is the cooling effect). ● Absorber: The vapor is absorbed back into the lithium bromide solution. ● Cycle Repeats: The solution returns to the generator, and the process starts over. Advantages of Exhaust Absorption Chillers work: Exhaust Absorption chillers are mainly used to convert waste heat into useful cooling, making the entire energy system more efficient It helps in significantly reducing electrical load, great for areas with high power costs or limited supply. These chillers often use natural refrigerants, mainly water, that are non-toxic and ozone-friendly. Challenges of Exhaust Absorption Chillers: Exhaust absorption chillers are energy-efficient and eco-friendly but due to theirsmaller or less heat-intensive setups, they face challenges like their dependency on a consistent and high-temperature waste heat source which effects their performance drop. They also require higher initial installation costs and more space compared to traditional chillers. Conclusion: Exhaust absorption chillers offer a smart and sustainable way to utilize waste heat for cooling, making them ideal for large-scale, continuous operations where energy efficiency and environmental impact are priorities. These chillers can be a valuable addition to modern energy systems aiming for greener and more cost-effective solutions.
